As other pen makers of it's time Parker used this type of material almost since the beginning of their fountain pen production, creating some, now amazing, collectible fountain pens.
Along my 25 years collecting I was lucky to find the group of pens I'm sharing today with all of you.

In 1930 and despite the Great Depression ( which begun in October 1929 )
, Waterman's had the audacity (?) to launch a luxury and expensive
model called Patrician when the other pen makers were producing low
coast pens and trying to keep themselves "above water".
The Patrician model in a Art Deco style were made with diferent attractive celluloid material and fitted with big gold nibs;
besides those characteristics they had a bigger size than the standard
for those days ( we can remember the size of the Parker Thrift time
models ) .These pens are nowadays very sough after by collectors .
In 1931 (?) on the other side of the Atlantic a British pen manufacturer
called Mentmore, launched the Platignum Supreme , a more slim and
modest pen with a steel nib but not less nice ......and, with some
similarities with the U.S. Patrician models. If we remember about the
close commercial relationships between UK and USA we should easily
understand these facts as more than a coincidence !?
In an attempt
to confirm the launching dates of both pens ( in order to understand who
influenced who ) I emailed Stephen Hull a friend pen collector and a
expert in British pens who with the characteristic British fairplay
answered me that " unfortunately" it seems that Patrician was launched
before Platignum .....
So , this Friday , before Easter , I woke up
early in the morning and shoot these photos which I'm pleased to share
with all my pen friends and all those who love pens. Hope you will
enjoy.

Common people who nowadays use a cartridge filler pen - actually the most widely used filler system - can't imagine the long run since the distant year of 1890 when Eagle Pen Co. created the first pen with a glass cartridge ! The pen was not a commercial success probably due to several factors being the more important the fragility of the cartridge and the consequent broken and leakage . The idea was put in practice again during the 1920s by another pen company called Pollock Pen Co. which made the John Hancock pen, but this time with a copper cartridge ; once again and besides the beauty look of some models the pen didn't receive the public acceptance. In 1936 it was the time for Waterman's to try it's luck with a glass cartridge, once again, ( but this time more thick than the one tried by Eagle ) . And once again no acceptance by the public. Only in 1953 Waterman's won finally the public acceptance with the CF model with a plastic cartridge ! The CF ( cartridge filler) model was a streamlined model and the beauty and great variety of pens made them a very collectible with some very sought after models by fountain pen collectors. Besides the cartridge there was also a convertor with a similar shape. These converters are nowadays very difficult to find.

Pull lever( or the true lever ) with three main variations : without box ( the more commun) ,with box ( ex: LE Waterman's , Eclipse etc. ) and splitting lever ( ex: the Swan split lever or the Lotz lever we find in the Kraker pens: Pencraft, Monogram, Drew , Belmont and so

on ). Besides these variations some manufacturers attached the lever in a reversed position oposite to the usual one like for instance the British Macauley or the American Eisenstadt .

The invention of the lever filler it is attributed until today to Walter Sheaffer ( or at least the patent it is registered in its own name in the year of 1912 ) ;anyway we know today that this filler system was invented by a man called Barnes in the year of 1903 .

The potential and eficacy of this filling mechanism was such that other pen makers followed very quikly with slightly different patents including the well known L E Waterman's pen maker and the less well known Eclipse Pen Co of New York who had introduced a self filler with a lever filler mechanism based on a patent registered in US by Marx Finstone the Eclipse' founder and owner ( anyway it is known through the articles writen bythe late John Roede,( Eclipse expert and collector)in some magazines that almost all the Eclipse patents registered in Marx Finstone name were in fact invented by his brother in law David Klein! ) . As a curiosity we can add that Eclipse patent for its lever was registered in August 28 , 1917 with No. 1,238657). Eclipse was founded in 1903 in S. Francisco by Marx Finstone with an export department in New York City by the mid twenties and with another factory in Toronto ( under the management of Joseph Tully ) and they supplied the Conway Stewart ( from UK ) lever filler mechanisms without bearing any identifying marks ( other than perhaps the US patent date inscribed in the lever ) from 1916 till 1920 ( until at least Conway Stewart could produce their own levers during late 1919/1920 ) .

The lever filler is indeed one of the most widely used filling mechanisms and it is also very interesting for its simplicity and eficacy - as a matter of fact you only have to pull a small bar from the pen barrel wich is going to depress a rubber sac and when you release the lever bar and push it to the original position the rubber sac fills itself with ink with the vacuum created when it was depressed ! this lever was with time the place of a lot of modifications with the objective to " run out the patent infringe" but also to improve its eficacy and security ( we should remember the problems around the fixation of some levers to the barrel and its partial drop out from the barrel or even some broken barrels due to much pression from the lever! ) .

If technically the evolution of the the lever filler it is very interesting ( and in our opinion one of the more important adition was the lever box ) , we can not forget the other

functions of the levers : decorativo , or as one more place in the pen to imprint anything like the brand name or just a letter related with the brand name ( S for Supremacy or Spencerian , E for Eisenstadt and so on ) or even the patent number ( like in some All American Conklin models ) !

And when we put toghether function with beauty we have what ? You right : we have Design ! And we can talk without favour not only about design of a pen but also about design of a so small pen device like the lever filler ! So what did begin as an important part of a pen besides keeping its function did adquire another important function : decorative !

We can easily remember for instance the nice engraved lever of the diferent Waterman's models from the " VINE " sterling overlays .

And we see levers with diferent forms : completely straight , with diferent ends ( circular, elliptical , triangular or with other geometrical forms ) imprinted with the brand names or models and so on. But the top of this beautiful levers was reached during the Art Deco period in particular with the more important French manufacturers !

After this introduction about this filling system enjoy these woderful Sheaffer's pens .

The VACUMATIC are in my humble opinion a big group of pens or a big type of pens , each one of them with its own caractheristics ( size , color, shape, cap bands, nib, clip, pattern and so on ) and for that reason each one of them with a special charme! During the VACUMATIC era, a lot of celluloid plastics were offered by DuPont to Kenneth Parker who had to evaluate and discuss ( together with his staff ) which colours and patterns had the chance to be a commercial success. The solid colours were not an option but as usual some prototypes were made. It´s interesting to think that too many years after, this option was taken to produce some British, French and Danish Duofolds!
Along the years I had the oportunity to buy some of these so rare pens or even mockups ( without nib or feeder ).
So you have now the chance to have a look at some of these beauties.
Enjoy!

It is known by all the vintage fountain pen collectors that the Parker Duofold introduced in the market in the year of 1922 was not only a big comercial success but also a breath of fresh air in a time where the market was dominated by a majority of black pens! The orange color was a great change and the beginning of a new era in the fountain pen market patterns and colors. But nothing lasts forever and as the time went by, the Parker leadership of the Pen market was in danger with the crescent rising of the sales of it's direct competitors. The situation was such that in 1931 ( after the great October 1929 crash ) and following a downward spiral initiated in the end of 1929 , Parker sold only 585.000 Duofold units wich means half the 1929 total sales of the same model! In the 8th of July 1931 "Proxy" magazine , George Parker wrote what he called his winning formula : "IT CAN BE DONE" ( do you remember: YES WE CAN ? ) . Still according to George Safford Parker : if I work three times as hard as I did in 1928 or 1929 , I will get a normal business. Hard work never hurt anyone. There are too many people in this world who are going around handing out self-pity to themselves( this words should be remembered now in 2014 by a lot of people of my nice country but that it's another story) .
In those days the pen market leadership was Sheaffer with it's Balance model followed by Waterman's with the Patrician model ( introduced in December 1929 ) . Both models had ink rubber sac and lever filler system. The Duofold button filler system although patented in 1905 by J.T. Davison had been the Duofold filling system since around 1912. To Kenneth Parker ( the youngest George Parker's son ) the ink rubber sac and the lever filler wasn't efficient anymore and more than that, he considered that this system flawed! Kenneth Parker was thinking of a sacless pen reservoir but although such a system was already patented and the first one was Charles Dunn in 1905 , there were some problems with this system wich used for the first time a moving piston inside the barrel. The main problem was an adequate sealing of the piston and equalising air pressure during the filling cycle .
Time for Arthur Dahlberg ! Dahlberg a polymath professor, born in Michigan wrote nine books on economics and worked on NRA ( National Recovery Administration ) created by President Roosevelt . Besides that Dahlberg was an inventor. It's inventor's activity was only a hobby for him . There is some proof that as early as 1921 he had patented a fountain pen that could fill Kenneth Parker's idea of a fountain pen whereby the ink reservoir was the pen barrel itself and the ink could be pumped directly into that barrel. In 14 of September 1928 Dahlberg filled a patent with improvements to his first invention .
Several issues arose over the comercial relationship between Dahlberg and Kenneth Parker between their first meeting on the 27th of April 1928 and the final agreement in 30 January of 1932 when Parker paid Dahlberg a total amount of $20,500 US Dollars in cash to purchase his patent. Imagine the equivalent of such an amount of money in our time!
It's interesting to do a quick trip over what happened during this gap of time between April 1928 and January 1932 : Parker lawyers were hesitant about the veracity of the claims as they feared Dahlberg could have infringed Dunn's patent ( later on they found no foundation for such a fear) ; on the first atempts to reach a deal, the amount of money asked by Dahlberg to Kenneth Parker was so big that the deal was not possible; after that failure Dahlberg tried other pen manufacturers : Sheaffer , Conklin, Swan Pen Co. in New York City and Waterman. After Waterman showed no interest in his patent , Dahlberg tried his luck with smaller companies and in the early part of 1929 ( before the crash ) he succeed with the Corona Pen Company of Antioch, Illinois . I had not access to the amount involved in that deal and as far as I know such a deal never took place although it is known that some pens were made under Dahlberg's system. The sale of his patent to the Corona Pen
Co.was not concluded due to the crash at the end of the year
1929 . I never found such a pen but I'm still looking for one!

After the conclusion of the deal when Parker decided to make the new pen some technical problems surfaced as is usual with new products and other people fixed those problems but that it is another topic. Now after the introduction of Arthur Dahlberg and besides the badly ended relationship with Kenneth Parker we can consider this man as the keystone to put in practice the idea of a new pen born in Kenneth's Parker mind. For that reason Parker made twelve pens of at least four models to honor the name of Arthur Dahlberg and inspired ( at least three of them ) on a Tefft's patent faceted design of 1933. The pens were made in the thirties and called the Dahlberg Vacumatics.
Once again I wish to thank to my friend João Pavão Martins who worked on this photo in order to reach this kind of quality.
On the Parker Vacumatic book by Geoffrey Parker,David Shepherd and Dan Zazove you can read on page 108 that the Parker Vacumatic Holy Water Sprinkler was an idea ( another one ) , of George Parker . The model was released in 1935 an according to the same authors: "Sprinklers literally flooded the Churches at Christmas".
For any unknown reason these Parkers are nowadays very scarce and for that reason (?) very sought after by vintage fountain pen collectors. I was fortunate enough to find two of these pens during my 20 years collecting. I hope you can enjoy them.
This is a very curious burgundy VACUMATIC pen with a 14 K trim and an inlaid diamond on the extremity of the arrow clip; the engraved 14 K wide cap band says: ERNEST E. DODGE . It's very tempting to think if this pen belonged to the founder and owner of that motorcar company or to one of it's relatives! I will try to do a research about this when I have some free time left. Meanwhile enjoy the pen which should be an expensive model in those days.
This interesting small Welsh combo pen is made with a celulloid pattern patented by Kenneth Parker !!!!!
This is a mistery because this pattern was patented by Kenneth Parker as we can confirm in the Vacumatic book by Geoffrey Parker, David Shepherd and Dan Zazove ( pag. 117 ).
IT ALSO RAISES THE QUESTION ABOUT ANY PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN WELSH AND PARKER !
An unknown number of these pens were made and offered to some people. I have a fountain pen collector friend who has in it's collection 4 of these samples.
Due to my intense professional activity I arrived on thurday the 7th of November in the evening, I stayed Friday the 8th and I left on Saturday the 9th to land in Lisbon at 6:00 AM Sunday in order to have some rest and go back to work on Monday! A completely crazy trip!
It happened that my friend Dan Zazove invited me to have dinner during my only free night in Ohio with him and three other fountain pen collectors: Alfonso Mur my Spanish " brother" and probably the biggest Conklin collector, David Shepherd a well known Parker collector, researcher and author of Parker books and another collector I met for the first time called Tony Tavill a physician like myself but specialized in liver diseases. We had a wonderfull dinner ( nice food, nice wine and friendly and nice talks ).
On the last weekend during the Madrid Pen Show my friend João Pavão Martins gave to me the summer edition of the WES Journal ( Writting equipment society - from UK ) with a nice article written by Tony Tavill about the QUEEN ELISABETH #75 PARKER limited edition, a pen I care too much and I bought several years ago with the particularity that the box carried inside a loaner similar pen to loan to those who were in need of their original pen to be fixed. The loaner pen has a light color when compared with the original one.
I hope that you will enjoy not only the article and the pen but also the desk base and pens made by my friend Micky Conway.

It's well know by collectors of old fountain pens that the Italian manufacturers besides wonderful original fountain pens also searched inspiration in some US brands namely the Parker Pen Company.

Here are two really nice and special pens: a Vacumatic and an Ancora both made with similar patterns of celulloid .

During the Great Depression Parker made some pens under it's own brand name but also under other less common names: COLONIAL , PENCO, CADILLAC, FIFTH AVE. , SAFFORD ( the midlle name of the founder and company owner, George SAFFORD Parker ....???????). During the Madrid Pen Show I found a pen with a clip similar to the Eisenstadt or the Gold Medal pens in the table of my friend Alfredo Recuero Sarmento . The interesting of this pen was not only the shape of the clip but also that it was made in a celulloid similar to the Challenger Parkers ; the barrel's imprint was also similar to the Parker ones, but it was a bulb filler! After a research I found in the Vacumatic book by Dan Zazove, David Shepherd and Geoffrey Parker that the PENCOPEN was made by Parker!

I brought these two oversized maxima Vacumatic Parker pens from the Madrid Pen Show : one set in green and another pen with a transparent black barrel , ( this last one with a star clip ). Which it's interesting it's the fact that on the barrel's imprint we can read " made in USA " but in a bottom line " marca registrada" ! These pens were made to export to Spain and also to South America ( Brasil included) .
